Say that throughput volumes are overwhelming your current, manual distribution operation. You’ve decided its time to design and implement a new world-class material handling system to support growth projected over the next five years.
Now what?
The most successful material handling system design and integration projects typically have three distinct phases:
Define your future operating requirements over the five-year planning horizon.
Develop set of alternative designs based on future requirements defined in step 1.
Identify capital investment and annual costs associated with each alternative.
Perform economic analysis to identify the incremental ROI for each alternative.
Identify qualitative factors that may influence the decision process
Rank alternative designs according to each quality.
Weigh results of economic and qualitative analyses and select preferred design.
Develop project budget and secure funding.
Develop detailed functional specifications for selected design concept.
Prepare vendor questionnaire and solicit responses from vendor community.
Evaluate responses to questionnaire and prepare vendor short list.
Solicit bids by sending functional specifications to vendors on short list.
Schedule and attend site tours/demos etc. as required to aid decision process.
Evaluate bids and select preferred vendor(s).
Negotiate contract with chosen vendor(s).
Develop implementation schedule.
Develop and manage detailed facility migration plan.
Manage system implementation.
Integrate new systems with legacy software and material handling systems
Develop and execute system acceptance testing.
Create and manage system punch list.
Develop system documentation and train personnel.
Manage system cutover and go live.
By following a methodical approach like the one outlined above, you maximize your probability of success while minimizing the risks associated with a major material handling system implementation.
