More than a supplier of products, Salon Support provides education, marketing strategy, and business acumen through its innovative Salon Support Academy.

“We serve people through a commitment to contribute to the success of our suppliers, our customers, our customer’s customers, and our employees,” Ford said.

This commitment to training and information sharing includes the 172 employees at their corporate campus, and some 25,000 salons nationwide.

A key strategy is a focus on education, training and continuous improvement across Salon Support’s supply chain.

The company’s customers, salon owners and employees of salons are encouraged to participate in structured training opportunities offered year round. “The results have been dramatic,” Ford said. Some salons have shown sales growth of 200%.

As for Salon Support’s employees, “We train 30 minutes every morning. You fight like you train”, says Ford.

The Salon Support business model has been described as an inverted pyramid, counter to the traditional top-down culture. Ford continues, “We signed up for this model because it was difficult, and if we pulled it off, we would clearly be differentiated.”
